ARTIST BACKGROUND
My creative path began with a love of music—the kind that filled my little pink MP3 player, held me through city transitions, and taught me how to express feelings and emotions. That love opened the door to poetry, where I took pen to paper and translated messages into lines. Lines in my journals grew into verses — the verses started to say things I didn’t even know I had deep inside of me. Brought to life by an instrumental that plays a sound with the same emotion-evoking energy introduced me to spoken word. And so, my creative path goes:
Writing = poetry = spoken word = song.
Coming soon? My first poetry book + accompanying spoken word EP!

Poetry
Maribel Sánchez
The first piece I’ve ever written, performed, and copyrighted. Centers identity, culture, determination, and social justice advocacy.
Maribel Sánchez
Poem inspired by a prompt that said:
Write a poem based on an ocean rhyming “wide” “tide” “sail” & “prevail”.
I AM THE NORM
I am Mexican, born American, but never forgetting my roots
Brown eyes, dark hair, I have all the attributes.
I can’t hide the color of my skin
In the beginning, I hated it
it’s something I wish I would have never been
White supremacy made me think being Brown was a sin
And now, I am proud of who I am, it’s a big win
Winning in some ways more than others
I have privileges, many more than my father and my mother
They crossed—, full of hope and determination
Little did they know there would be tons of segregation
Discrimination and frustration
Like the times my dad has been racially profiled
I’ve witnessed it before, and it was more than wild
Or when my mom was told to speak only English
It was like her freedoms were diminished
These were just a few examples - and no, I’m not finished
—
These systemic oppressions are embedded in our world’s history
The reason behind them, I always thought was a mystery
But life’s course taught me otherwise
The root of it all is that we were colonized
The perpetrators, they wanted us “civilized”
They thought the indigenous were savages in disguise
And now, it’s like we’re inferior in their eyes
Sadly, it’s still a matter of who’s superior
And society will always create rankings from the exterior
It’s WE who have to challenge it
Fight it and ignite it
But this is what they don’t understand,
My intersecting identities are their own brand
America is an immigrant’s land
Tell me to go back to my country and here is where I will stand
Patriarchy and racism have gotten out of hand
Because the rise in diversity was something they didn’t plan
They want to assemble a hateful clan
Full of injustice and violence
Only to keep us in silence
But here we are - ready to display our defiance
Because People of Color have formed a stronger alliance
—
Because diversity is multidimensional
The action that’s required has to be intentional
Race, gender, sexuality, religion, and more
We are willing to fight for what we stand for
But this time, there will be no war
Because you can’t fight hate with hate
We use love to elevate
Kill em’ with kindness
And we don’t show color blindness
There’s no way we can be absent minded
With a strong support system - we can stay united
And inspire the generations to come
I have a six-year old niece I need to save from
These atrocities that no one else should have to endure
And the thing is - there is no one single cure
It’s going to take several steps in the right direction
One is making strong and valuable connections
Putting it on the agenda & ensuring its heard
Touching what hasn’t been stirred
And we are the ones with policies that need to be written
We are the ones tired of what’s been given
…
But I will rise up in spite of the outrage
I’ll use my voice when they put children in a cage
Regardless of my age
I’ll prove to society that I am the norm
In everything I perform
They will feel the storm.

PREVAIL
Oceans so wide
With so many tides
Why do we go there to hide?
We should feel what’s inside
Our hearts and our minds
Let our emotions ride
Bringing us closer to ourselves
In order to prevail
When life hits like a hurricane
Race to another lane
Think about staying
What are you saying?
Go to another space
To feel a different embrace
Be like the ocean
Deep in your devotion.

Acting | Actuación
My acting journey began with a deep love for storytelling — first through writing, then music + poetry, and now performance. Acting allows me to enter new worlds, uplift narratives often overlooked, and offer meaningful representation to show authentic and impactful visibility toward underrepresented people.
I’m actively building my portfolio and expanding my experience for a diverse set of roles (tv, movie, music video, etc). If you're casting or seeking fresh talent with heart, discipline, and range, I’d be honored to be considered.
First official acting feature in the music video of “STILL” by Thunderbird Hotel.
Maribel narrates a pitch to describe her alma mater - Wichita State University in Spanish.
Same video narrated in English.
